Maternity Insurance

Eligibility Conditions

The insured woman shall be entitled to maternity leave allowance regardless of the number of births, provided  that she is covered by maternity insurance during the last (6) months preceding the maternity leave, and that the birth is proven by an official birth certificate or a death certificate issued by the Status and Passports Department for newborns who died after the sixth month of pregnancy.”

Maternity insurance calculation mechanism

  • The insured woman shall be paid an allowance equivalent to her wage in accordance with the last deductible wage at the commencement of maternity leave for the entire period of maternity leave specified in the Labour Law in force (currently 70 days), and this allowance shall be calculated as follows: Maternity leave allowance = (wage subject to the commencement of maternity leave / 30× 70), The amount of maternity leave allowance, old-age, disability, death and unemployment insurance contributions are deducted from the amount of the maternity leave allowance.
  • The insured woman can calculate the maternity leave allowance and submit an application for maternity leave allowance electronically through the service of obtaining maternity leave allowance, which is listed on the Organization’s website (ssc.gov.jo).

General provisions regarding maternity insurance

  • The insured woman who has received maternity allowance may not request the payment of lump sum compensation, unless her contribution period prior to maternity leave is not less than (12) contributions, or if she returns to work covered by the provisions of the law after obtaining the allowance.
  • The insured woman may not combine the maternity leave allowance with the unemployment allowance, and in the event that she is entitled to maternity leave allowance and unemployment allowance, the higher allowance shall be paid.
  • The payment of maternity allowance shall be suspended in the event that the insured woman joins work during this leave, and the employer’s obligations in maternity insurance under the provisions of the law correspond to his obligation to grant wages to the insured woman working during maternity leave in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Law in force.
